Upholland Tourist Guide

Upholland

Just 3 miles east of Skelmersdale, Upholland is a small town in West Lancashire. It is situated on a small hill rising above the West Lancashire Coastal Plain which gives you beautiful views of Manchester and the high peaks of Derby. The name Upholland came from the De Holland family who owned the manor of Holland until 1534. George Lyon one of the last English highwaymen is rumoured to be buried in the church of St Thomas the martyr which attracts many visitors each year. More recent famous names from the town include Richard Ashcroft from The Verve and actor Ian Bleasdale. The father of comedian Ted Ray owned The Bulls Head pub in the town which meant that Ted spent most of his childhood in the town. Upholland is also known for its love of art. It even has its own art society which is made up of being amateur and professional artists from the area.
